THE OPENING
Tap, Tap!! The tapping sound of the microphone is heard in the auditorium, spotlights were focused to a lady standing on the Podium and the audience are eagerly waiting for her speech. After the audience’s applause, she starts her “Talk”.
CHAPTER: 1 – A SPILL TO SCAM
Set-Up 1:
A girl runs through the street, where on a small stage a Local Ward Counsellor is giving his speech and we hear the same tapping sound of the microphone as heard before. She gets into her ground floor flat in the low-cost housing board panting, knocks the door for her mother to open.
SCENE 2: STREETS OF NORTH MADRAS
GIRL/ (SPEAKER): “Amma!!…. (I called and paused for a second.) I thought of hugging her and crying my heart out on seeing my mom but stopped because the reason I had didn’t allow me.”
My Mother asked me, “What had happened?”
GIRL/ (SPEAKER): “I was really upset because from the past three days my experience at school was bad. By the end of the day, I wasn’t satisfied with my performance in the past three daily slip tests.
I really come from a lower-middle-class family. In my childhood, once I took an oath to study well and improve the current status of my family, but time tests us, our sincerity and determination…It tested me too in the form of Adolescence…I was studying in my ninth and I had a crush on my school founder’s grandson Rohan… He was quite handsome and back then every girl in the class was trying to impress him and be around him. Every year he would invite the class to his birthday party and that very fine day was his birthday.
For the past three days I wasn’t able to concentrate on the studies for two reasons:
The school had suddenly increased the tuition fee and all the middle-class parents were protesting against it. I was worried whether my father will be able to pay or not.
And I had been bullied by Rohan for the past three days which resulted in my poor performance in the exam.
On the third day, with that, I was totally worn out and was depressed. What had happened that day? I will tell you all…..
Set-Up 2:
In our school, they provide us with lunch (Similar to Sath Unavu/Mid-day Meal) though it wasn’t a residential one, which is again a separate fee and is compulsory. That day I was very angry, ignorant and was not aware of my actions, I accidentally hit the workers carrying hot Sambar in a huge vessel which spilt all over the place. I was given good scolding by the supervisor and our teacher.
I left school early (half-day) after lunch and didn’t care to attend Rohan’s birthday party. While walking through the rear entrance of Ayyanar Annachi Kayakari Mandi (Ayyanar Vegetable wholesale market) irritated and cursing my life, my leg accidentally touched a sleeping stray dog. It started barking at me and which made me furious as I was fed up of being scared and being bullied so I started hitting the dog with the stones, plastic scraps etc, whatever was available at the spot. The dog started running, I started chasing it and then it climbed on top of a huge Municipal Disposal Bin and then to a window’s sunshade of an adjacent building. Still, I didn’t give up; I was throwing stones on it and one of the stone hit a window in that lane. As soon as the window broke, a gunshot was heard and I immediately fled the place on hearing it.
SCENE -3
I explained this to my mom in brief without revealing my crush issues; she just kissed me on my forehead and said everything going to be alright.
She made my favourite Panniyaram (South Indian Dish) and was feeding me as my father arrived tensed and sweating. He asked us to switch on the TV and tune into the NEWS and to our surprise, we saw our Founder/Principal and Annachi being arrested for Illegal Gold purchase.
